LIVERPOOL’S refurbished Central Library will have 30,000 fewer books than before its pounds 50m revamp.
The city centre building is due to close this month for two years, during which it will be completely overhauled inside.
To free up space, Liverpool council is holding a “fire sale” of thousands of books, many of which are being sold for as little as pounds 1. Any left will be given to a social business, which will try to sell them online.
Books which are still unwanted will be given away to charity shops, schools and hospitals.
The council said the 30,000 titles being ditched are rarely borrowed and no longer significant.
It said it needs the space previously taken up by the volumes to display the library’s special collections and the city’s archives.
It is not known what proportion of Central Library’s books are being put on sale, but the council said the total catalogue across all the city’s libraries runs into the millions, including DVDs, CDs, journal articles and the online collection.
The council also said each year the library buys 90,000 “items” for its catalogue.
The money raised from the sale of the old books will be spent on a special project in the William Brown Street library.
A council spokesman said the mass clear-out was needed to make room for an expanded archives section.
Liverpool Records Office, already the biggest outside London, will be expanded to provide for 20 more years worth of documents.
The records office currently houses 14km of archives, including the original King John’s Charter which made Liverpool a city in 1207.
The spokesman said: “The exciting redevelopment of Central Library has given us the first opportunity in 40 years to thoroughly review the millions of items in the building and deselect those which have not been requested for many years and are of no significance.
“All the [de-selected] books have already been offered to the British library, specialist book sellers, and academic and public libraries in Merseyside before being placed on sale.
“We want to make use of every inch of space to put on show items which people are interested in.
“There will be additional room to display the city’s historic archives and we are creating 20 years worth of capacity to accommodate items acquired in the future.
“We will be using the money raised from the sale of books for a special project, which will be announced in the near future.”
He added certain types of book were exempted from the sell-off, including current editions of text books, titles supporting the national curriculum, out-of-print classics, specialist or unique books, and anything of local interest or containing local infor mation.
The plans for the library also include a new forecourt with an outdoor cafe, rooftop terrace and meeting rooms.
A soundproof “games pod” for teenagers will be installed, as well as wi-fi internet and downloading facilities.
The revamp will return the Grade II-listed parts of the library, which date back to 1850, to their former glory.
The restored library is set to reopen in 2012.
